Indonesia has achieved a significant milestone in its pursuit of food self-sufficiency, with government rice reserves reaching 4 million tons— the highest level since the establishment of the state logistics agency, Perum Bulog, in 1969.
Strategic Policies Drive Record-High Rice Reserves in Indonesia
Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman attributes this achievement to strategic policies implemented under President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.
These policies include increased local procurement and support for farmers, leading to improved welfare and national self-reliance.

“All parties have worked together to help Indonesia secure the biggest rice reserves in history,” Minister Sulaiman stated.
The government’s focus on strengthening production and facilitating farmers has been instrumental in reaching this milestone.
As of May 29, 2025, Bulog’s rice absorption stood at 2,407,257 tons, contributing to the total official national rice stocks of 4,001,059 tons.
Local Procurement Surges, Enhancing Farmer Welfare and Food Security
The surge in local rice procurement has significantly benefited Indonesian farmers.
By the end of May 2025, Bulog had secured over 2.4 million tons of locally produced rice, a 400 percent increase compared to the five-year average for the same period.
This increase in procurement has provided farmers with profitable selling prices, even during the main harvest season.
Minister Sulaiman emphasized that this achievement reflects the government’s commitment to improving farmer welfare and ensuring national food security.

Indonesia Plans Rice Exports Amidst Surplus Production
With the substantial increase in rice reserves, Indonesia is considering exporting rice to neighboring countries.
President Prabowo Subianto has approved a plan to export rice to Malaysia, with an initial proposal of 2,000 tons per month.
“President Prabowo Subianto has made it clear that the government is willing to supply rice to countries in need, especially neighboring nations,” Minister Sulaiman said.
However, he emphasized that rice exports would only be permitted once domestic demand is fully met.
The government plans to export rice from West Kalimantan, the closest region to Malaysia, through business-to-business agreements.

Government Initiatives Aim to Expand Farmland and Boost Production
To sustain and enhance rice production, the Indonesian government plans to expand farmland by three million hectares over the next five years.
This initiative aims to cultivate staples such as rice, corn, and soybeans, utilizing swamp lands in South Sumatra, Central Kalimantan, and Papua.
The expansion is part of President Prabowo’s broader strategy to achieve food self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imports.
Deputy Agriculture Minister Sudaryono emphasized that this expansion will not involve clearing pristine forests but will utilize underutilized lands.
The government aims to increase rice production to meet domestic needs and support potential exports.
A Milestone in Indonesia’s Journey Toward Food Self-Sufficiency
Indonesia’s achievement of 4 million tons in government rice reserves marks a significant step toward national food self-sufficiency.
The government’s strategic policies, increased local procurement, and plans for farmland expansion contribute to this success.
However, sustaining this growth requires careful planning, investment in infrastructure, and market stability to ensure long-term benefits for farmers and the nation.
As Indonesia continues its journey toward food self-reliance, the focus remains on balancing production with demand and maintaining stable prices for consumers and fair returns for farmers.***
